Salad + Pizza + Fish Fry + steak

Today mum took us out to Cafe Alizeh for Salad+Pizza+FishFry+Steak. It absolutely rocks. Today was the day I ate a lot after a long long time. I woke up late(really late) around 2pm. And made myself a chicken burger with mayo and cheese(all the heavy stuff). And then my mom comes back from college and tells us to get ready cos we're eating out.
Over there we met Dimitri, and it turns out that my mom's College Colleagues and Dimitri's family are related. Isnt it a small world after all. I even asked my mom on the way out if there's anyone in Lahore who she didnt have contacts with. My family has a lot. My dad was a banker, has a cement business, and is a homeopath, and my mom is a college professor. My moms side of the family is from Killa Deedar Singh in Gujranwala, while my dads side of the family keeps shifting. Quetta, Karachi and now lahore. Apart from that we've lived in Abu-Dhabi and Dubai for 7 years. And that means even more contacts. In fact when my sister was in the process of getting engaged, we found out that the people on the other side were distant relatives of ours. My great grandfather and their great grandfathers were brothers. It really is a small world after all.
And now the foods settling, I need to go to sleep. All this eating is making me sleepy, sleepy, sleepy.

holiday season

This holiday season, I had lots of stuff planned. Well not actually. Most of the things are just coming to my head as I write this but here goes:-
  1. Go around Lahore and eat stuff
  2. Visiting old friends
  3. Work on somehting creative
  4. Do some maintainence on my PC and organization of stuff. The pic below should show the importance of this point
  5. Finish editing of the video that Basim and I worked on, and thinking of a name
  6. Coming up with new video ideas.
  7. Finish work on the earthquake blog, after compiling some of the articles which I wrote.
  8. Thinking of what to do with my life. Something made aware by a person who was made aware by a wise person. Its a long story
  9. Working on my FYP :( now my advisor left GIKI. Now aint that just swell. The say it isnt good bringing home work so I'm going to go to giki sometime in the next couple of days, to get some work done. Hopefully i'll be back before EID.
  10. Praying for my result. I hope that somehow by the Grace of God my GPA is maintained. This is something that I need to do a lot. And I expect all of you ppl to pray for me too.
  11. Doing some artwork of some sort.
  12. Playing some PC games and getting a life. The semesters in which I quit PC games bring my GPA down somehow. I have a couple of bad omens some of which are not playing PC games and getting a haircut. THey both have grave implications with regard to my GPA. Next sem its games, games and games for me. No more extra credits.
  13. Working on the ugX site. Something that I've been delaying since a long long time.
  14. Learning 3D Studio max for my FYP. Nurb modelling. How many of you people need to learn 3D Studio max for your FYP's eh??? My FYP rocks. Even though my advisor ran away :D
  15. Evaluating some admission stuff so that I can apply to Helsinki and Tampere. I missed KTH's deadline because of sheer laziness
  16. Need to find a substitute of the word sheer. I use it so much that its become a cliche.
  17. Continuing Driving lessons. Something that I dont think I'll get onto anytime soon.
  18. Completing this new Flash animation I'm working on called purple haze. Based on Jimi Hendrix'es song and its a total load of crap. I'll be glad to show it to you ppl when its done.
  19. Fininshing the millions of other half completed ideas that basim and I came up with starting from the 1st sem onwards. The movie, all ur girls, star trek the dumber generation are just some of them to begin with. I think I'll go on with Basims idea of doing Star Trek in Flash. It will be a lot more easier to implement over there.
  20. Getting free PHP hosting and launching a site with interactive stuff and all. I mean I love blogger. It is great. It has served me well and will continue to do so undoubtedly but dynamic stuff rocks. Plus I'll be able to put flash and lots of other stuff on it that I cant with blogger.
  21. Watching movies. Something I havent done in a long time. Oh and by the way, I saw constantine yesterday. It was weird but amusing at the same time esp cos it was a movie.
  22. Reminding Khalid to get me back my skipping rope from Karachi. That bloke took it to karachi and left it there during the summer break. Arrgh how I hate some people. You can make fun of me, you can throw me off a 100 story building, heck you can even drive a tractor over me, but when you come between me and my daily skipping routine, it means war.
  23. Oh and I also need to make and direct a dance video. Rap video to be exact. Its a real hard task and I feel like I'm up to the challenge.
  24. Listening to all the songs in my music folder and deleting the ones I dont like. Which would be quite a lot by the way. My tastes in music have changed a lot since I started collecting the folder. Plus Other people have been dumping stuff into it from time to time.
  25. Scanning my Artwork. THe loads of artwork that I keep drawing during classes. I need to scan it and maybe make a blogger template out of it. Which brings working on my blogger template into the limelight. Saady's recent post should help me a lot in this regard when I'm up to it.
  26. Converting the anagram of my name to vector graphics.
  27. Moving the CD writer from my brothers PC to my PC.
  28. Working on my OPEN GL if I really have time.
  29. Finding a pair of headphones around home I feel that I might wake someone up going on like this listening to all this loud music.
  30. Writing emails to all of my old friends. At least 100 words per friend. I'm losing contact with a lot of great people.
  31. Getting some new music, reading some new books, watching new movies and stuff. The contents in my head are getting stale.
  32. Taking a long long walk. Long is defined as something over 3 hours.
  33. Improving ways of how to managing my time. I need more time to waste. I have too little time to waste nowadays. Sucks!!!
  34. Looking at how me and my bro's PC's are doing on Seti@home. Which is not too bad. No 2 user in Pakistan. Not bad at all. Not long before we are no 1 in pakistan. Unfortunately that still means something like #15000 worldwide.
  35. Working on my Python. I'm delaying it so much that it is on the verge of being classified as, "A lost cause". THe only other thing I can think of in that category right now is my FYP. :P LOL
  36. Working on an ANAGRAM and/or other artwork for WHIM. My FYP group.
  37. Being a better person. <<-- where the heck did that come from.
  38. Strike out point # 37 and run an eveil empire. Like that of Evil Ze Kat in Earth Worm Jim. Man I miss that cartoon.
  39. Trying to get episodes of Earth Worm Jim from somewhere onto my PC.
  40. Writing a song. Its been over 2 semesters since I've done that. Basim and Billa where are you?????
  41. Getting acquainted with some good music synthesizing softwares. Lyrics arent the hard part. Its composing the music. Trust me this is personal experience talking here.
  42. Learning how to play the guitar. Something I wont be able to do for a long long time. The number 1 reason being that I have a guitar at home with just 2 strings in it.
  43. Getting up on the right side of the bed for a change. I'll rotate my bed 180 degrees and then sleep on it for starters.
  44. Saving these 43 points I wrote so far. You never know there might be a power shortage and then I'll have to write all of them all over again and thats not really encouraging.
  45. Make myself as many sandwiches at home as possible cos a fridge and a microwave are really rare items to come by especially in GEEKI
  46. Making a documentary on the study habits of various theeta's i've come across during the past couple of years. This is really funny. Just wait till I come to that part.
  47. I need to write stuff about Day #2 of Balakot. Its not fresh in my memory anymore. Need to sleep over it a night.
  48. Need to correct my posture. Otherwise I'll be complaining of backaches all my life.
  49. Need to learn more breakdance moves. I just know the switch at the moment. :E
  50. Does the word GYM and burning some calories remind me of something. Ummmm!!!!!! I guess not.
  51. 50 points already. This must really mean that I'm a really big procrastinator.
  52. Consult some wiseguys like Nash, Dexy, Emaad Rafi, Luqi, Umair for some advice regarding the future.
  53. Make playlists for music according to my mood. When I'm in a happy mood and a metal song comes up, it really pisses me off and vice versa.
  54. Playing some BBALL. Something that I've been looking forward to eversince a long long time. Gotta win at least one match in interbatch this time :)
  55. Need to catch up on a whole lot of sleep. At least 13 hours a day is what i recommend.
  56. Going to the market to see if theres something that I like. Its been a while since I got something.
  57. Do some real updating to my CV.
  58. Meeting my old teachers somehow. Man the new ones make the old ones look like wizards.
OH well I guess thats all. If I write more i fear I may go crazy. Anyways. Have a happy new year people.

Good Work Only 4 more to go tak tak tak tak tak tak tak ..........

I wish examinations were more like dangerous dave that way they would be a million times more interesting. But in the end theres no point complaining about stuff that we cant do anything about. As Sir Minhas(Man I miss that bloke) used to say:-

"Ours is not to reason why. Ours is just to do and die."

Todays OPMAN paper, was well unexpected but I managed to get it done except for 5 marks that I know lost in the subjective part because of time shortage and 3 MCQ's that I didnt know. After the Opman paper, I went off to look for the CG book I left there. When he took me to his office, I was held in awe. The office had its fair share of treasures in the form of lots of books, stationery, registers, etc. One could easily make a lot of money even if all this stuff was sent for recycling(To the raddi). Most of them were Books that people were happy to get rid of. Like MM(Materials and Mettalurgy), Pak Studies, etc. It took me a fair deal of time to look for my CG book and in around 10 minutes I was out.
After the paper, I slept, woke up had my dinner and now I have to study, but I feel so sleepy. This is one of the times I remember home most :P. In fact most GIKIANS consider their homes as a spiritual center for sleep. I just hope I make it thru these two deadly papers(Numerical tomorrow 5:30 pm and ANN the day after at 1:00 pm). After that its Compilers and TQM which are too far off for me to worry about :D.

Anyways until next time, which is probably going to be very soon this is your host logging off.

Hot water Dispensers : A blessing or a curse

Its been a week and a half since our hostel got hot water dispensers for making coffee and tea, and already I'm a junkie. I'm averaging 3 cups of tea every night and I'm developing a dependance on tea just to get my brain working. Well on the bright side, I'm eating less junk food, I usually have a packet of rusk that I have with tea, which lasts me 3 days on average, so this is a more economical phenomenon. Nowadays I'm having my exams, so sometimes the boost is worth it, but during the week before, it used to keep me awake and I had a hard time figuring out what to do so I used up my time doing research on topics such as:-
  1. How to improve my posture, a bunch of junk conjured by psychiatrists, but the amazing thing is that it all works.
  2. How to make ambigrams(Text that be read in more than one way. Oh and visit www.ambigram.net It's awesome.)
  3. Why your joints make crackling noises sometimes. Before my search I used to get different versions such as cartlidge interaction, muscle tearing, etc. But I finally found out the truth, and it is because of gases in the cavity that houses the synovial fluid and I also found out that there is no medical evidence liking this phenomenon with bone degeneration.
  4. Bulla Shah. I know I'm nowhere near a religious person, but the different versions I'm getting off the net from various sources are really conflicting and hence I wont state anything here, but his poetry is good.
Anyways I'm off to a cup of tea before I can get started on my ANN(Artificial Neural Networks) course.

Every Heard of negative Prefinals ???

What can I say. Mr. Masroor thought it would be swell to award -20 marks for plaigarism resulting in the following prefinal.

Even though a lot of these prefinals are in a process of being corrected, (i.e. -20 becomes -5) and some cases that were formerly as being copied are now being considered.

Aced the Opman presentation and Harry's Baby Lotion

The opman presentation was a breeze, esp cos of the stupid stuff that I put in e.g. preference matrices of making a world class University in Lahore vs that of Topi, giving stupid examples about shoes and non existent GIKI Yacht clubs.

The guy got so impressed that he left us after 40% of the presentation. (the remaining 60% was the part we didnt really know) after saying that you all get full marks because I know you all are hardworking. Hah!!!!!

Anyways nowadays I am getting double the number of calls. Ever since my sister married, I get separate calls from her side and seperate calls from my parents. So attending phone calls has become a busy affair. I talked to raheel yesterday over the phone. He left for Aussie land and stuff. I know how the poor bloke feels. Its like a place where you can return home after a year rather than just 2 months for GIKI. But I wont feel sorry for him cos he's in Sydney, has a great car, and a great city. WHich rocks compared to the village I study in :P. Topai!!!!! No! He should feel sorry for me :P

Ah while working on an FYP report yesterday night, harry suddenly thought his skin was breaking and he took me to the tuck shop for something to put on it. Reluctantly I agreed to tag along. Once we got there he went to the part of the store with all the cosmetics. From there he calls me and asks me the million dollar question, "Hey I-T ... Should I buy Fair & Lovely OR Baby Lotion". And when I laughed he started explaining to me the wrong associations people make with these kind of products with the female gender. Harry when will you ever learn. This is so good that I'm going to add it to the local taunt bot[copyright Systemizer] running on the IRC server. These things are too good to be true.

Other great recorded stupid stuff Harry said:-

// During a conversation of Harry and Stinger in the GIKI Cafe
Harry:    You're my Ice Cream
Stinger:  o_O
Harry:    I like you and I like Ice-Cream hence you're my Ice-Cream

I mean there should be an entire blog dedicated to harry out there.

Today's blog trivia : What did Harry actually buy at the end?
1) Fair and Lovely
2) Johnsons Baby Lotion
3) I'm not gay
4) Not even a bit interested

Earthquakes at 3:00 am: When will it stop

H2 just withstood another earthquake of magnitude  6.7 ish (My estimate). The hostel jolted enough esp on the second floor to have everyone wide awake and on their feet running. I meanwhile was enjoying a nice hot cup of tea, so I waited for the others to descend first. Earthquakes are bad enough. Hot tea can be bad as well. I just hope the folks up north are doing fine, though I seriously think that this earthquake would have brought even more landslides and distress to those up north. I just hope releif efforts this time are as eager as the earlier ones. Especially because intense cold is going to be the number 1 killer up north.
I just hope this doesnt continue, aftershocks make me nauseatic. Moreover in exam season this means chaos. A lot of the people who work at GIKI are from up north and Kashmir (cooks, mess attendants, etc). I wonder what thoughts go through their heads whenenver there is such an incident. They have so much to lose.
This semester has been one of my gloomiest ever semesters here in GIKI, my grandmother had recently departed when the semester started,  then there were some issues with the administration of GIKI which were more or less resolved at the end followed by a week of earthquake spells. And then there was Balakot. There's a lot of difference in what the TV tells you and what you get to know otherwise. Balakot was one of those experiences. Not everyday does once see a dead body being carried over a bridge every minute. In fact the 2 days I spent there were so full of events and accounts that I came back and wrote 2000 words just about one day, which will be published one day in my other blog as soon as I get the time, after my exams hopefully. And then there was guilt that I couldnt go and help BA set a school during the eid break at balakot later. Then there was the additional load of 21 credit hours, most of which was from 400 level courses. And just when I was about to break apart into a million pieces, my sisters wedding came along and that was fun. Right now I just feel like graduating and leaving this place for a break in which I will travel to a secret place where I will sleep for a thousand years. The truth is that I cant sleep for a thousand years so I'll sleep for four hours instead. So I'm off to my bed. (For a place where time flies by in seconds, this was surely a long long day).

P.S. The following blog was supposed to be published 2 days ago but couldnt be due to internet problems.

Today has been a really long day and now the night is also about to end.

The weekend started off with a CDMA workshop(FYI CDMA Means code Division Multiple Access), and its a better standard than GSM because in it every user uses every part of the entire frequency spectrum which reduces the net effect of noise on every user and supports 3 times as many users as GSM. If you dont get it then forget it :P. The workshop is being conducted by an ex GIKIAN teacher who taught batch 3. GIKI apparently was much better back then. At first I thought that I would pass the weekend studying for my final Exams which for me is watching series and movies with my books open. However Imad convinced me to check it out, so I decided to give it a try and even though I didnt have any interest in the Telecom sector or Mobile Technology, the teacher( Mr. Ismail) created a lot of interest. I may even take SatMob next semester. I am not however looking forward to my CDMA exam on the basis of which I will be certified if I score 70% or above. And I'm not looking forward to my Compilers Presentation, Computer Graphics Presentation, Operations Management preperation and semester finals that are all coming this week. I have a feeling my GPA will show another random fluctuation this semester(the last one was for the better).

This weekend the folks from Queen Mary were here too in thier futile attempts to trap unsuspecting GIKIAN's into joining their institue for which they demand a fee of 15000 pounds per annum only/=. The Briton they had gotten to speak on the behalf of QMC was quite a funny person whose research is in the area of male female interaction. I would add excerpts from his presentation in here but I'm just too sleepy right now. Need to start university Hunting once I complete my Bachelors. I might have to take the Toefl in the holidays. The only sucky thing is that every test costs Rs. 8000 which makes one think twice before appearing. I'll try applying to Europe, Aussie Land and the U.S. (I dont think that MIT and Stanford would take me although I could try for Renaissler Polytechnic :P).

Right now I'm deciding whether to sleep or not to sleep considering the fact that the workshop continues at 9:00 am and I have been up all night. Oh whatever I guess I'll sleep.

One title lost and two titles gained!!!

Before the wedding and before my mom and sisters devious plot which has left me literally without any hair(I'm speaking in relative terms: Relative to myself : Hehe!!). Oh now back to the subject. Before returnign to civilization they called me, "The Afro Man" but I was literally cut(as in scissor, lawn mower, turbines) short of my title. Anyways the upside was that I received two more instead.
The first title was the obvious title of IN LAW. The second not so obvious title was that of VAKIL. This is quite an awesome title that is usually translated to lawer, but in my case I'm a witness to my sisters nikah. This made me quite happy cos there were 2 Vakils, one me and the other one was my Uncle. It is quite ironic that I couldnt be present at my sisters nikah, I was a couple of hours late so I had to put in my signatures in boxes that were left blank later. Kumbaya!!! A witness who has witnessed nothing at all. Now isnt that just plain weird.

Anyways coming to the marriage. This Baraat like most baraat's was really emotional and stuff. I mean it started with the usual getting to the hall really early, seeing that everything is in order, waiting for guests and meeting everyone, followed by waiting for the groom to arrive, running up and accompanying my sister down to the stage, everyone getting pictures taken people coming to me and introducing me to their kids and stuff. Really hectic stuff. It wasnt that bland though. I just wish I could add video to my blog somehow, but blogging 3 days after something has happened makes recollection quite difficult. Then again it is more of an obligation. I wish I had developed pictures and stuff. Waisey maybe in the two weeks I get off after the semester I'll work with Raheel's(The Groom) brother Nabeel to work on a website in honor of the newly wed couple. www.Maria&Raheel.com was what we envisioned. It'll be full of pictures and stuff. But then again going on like this about it wont make anything happen so I'll cut off this blog right here saying that the wedding was awesome. I'd rather not go into the emotional stuff that followed. (My mom and other relatives crying is not what I want to fill this blog up with, I'd rather fill up this blog with pictures of the wedding food for all my GIKIAN friends. Mutton Karahi, Chicken Biryaani and Chicken Roast, followed by gajar waala halwa and kheer. Now lets see who gets emotional !!!)

/me is waiting for the pictures to get developed.

"My sister, the Bride"

Now I'm back in GIK already and wondering why I didnt have any blogs after the last one and before this one. A guy rarely gets time to blog when he is really busy and doing the stuff that he really needs to blog about. Theres a half finished blog on my bro's desktop even now :p. But I'll try to go over the events and highlights of my sisters wedding:-

Before the marraige KB bought a Sony HandyCam. Its an awesome lil device that was intended to give this marriage coverage apart from my Dad's olympus and oh the camera crew from my mom's university. The mehndi was at a quaint lil hall called the Dewaan-e-Sughan (if I'm getting the name correct) When we got there(an hour early), my mom put her artistic training to use by fixing up the bench that bride and groom were going to sit on, by putting on various kinds of flowers and stuff. Meanwhile I was goofing around bugging my sister. Not going to be so easy after she's married and all.

Then one by one the guests started arriving and the atmosphere started getting lively. And once the people from our side of the family were here, the bridegroom gang started making its way upstairs whilst getting flowers thrown at them by my cousins. I know this sounds weird, but thats the way of the east. Once they came up, we greeted them and the dulha made his way up to the bench followed by my sister the bride. During the time I was assigned the ardous task of being a camera man. Squeezing into crowds looking over shoulders and running around to get various angles was no mere task. It was a task that took all I had and left me with a terrible backache.

It was only after then that the actual fun started, with the dancing that followed shortly afterwards. It was so funny and even KB danced. It was a funny sort of a dance where he looked like a happy cricket umpire walking around declaring "OUT" and "SIX" over and over again. My dad thought they were I's so he called it the ICI dance. I got cofused too and started running around flapping my arms initially and later returned to the more normal type of dancing. Even my sister and raheel joined into the excitement later. My sister was doing the robot and raheel, well lets just say that he likes moving his arms vertically and his neck laterally. Slowly everyone joined in.

The dancing was followed by dinner and more dancing. Oh and I didnt have dinner at the tables like the regular folks. I got my sister to feed me from her plate. I didnt even know it and it was 2:00 am already. That was when we packed up and were ready to go home looking forward to the next occasion.

Anyways I would like to conclude this blog that should've been posted on Saturday with the follwing statement:-

I just hope that, "There'll be together forever until they find somebody new". Just Kidding.

Yet Again!!! Another shaadi blog

Yet again it is time for another Shaadi blog. But this time everything is different because its my sister and she's going to drive off into the great Australian outback on her Supra before I graduate which is both good and kinda sucks at the same time. :/

Well what can I say!!!! Anyways I arrived from GIK(HELL) yesterday and I missed the nikkah but I'm looking forward to the Mehndi that is scheduled for today.
(Note:See card below)

Everyone is busy in his own way. KB is in search for a Digital Camera for the event. My younger brother is preparing for his papers before the Mehndi. I wonder how the event is going to turn out to be. Wonder how I'll ever figure out the bhangra in time!! I guess I'll just have to put on some rap song on and improv. :P My sister will be doing the robot or at least that is what she claims. Lets see what KB conjures on the spot. This shall be interesting. :D

As far as the nikah was concerned, Abid uncle missed me, but you cant say that I didnt enjoy the event cos at least I enjoyed the food. But I missed my dad's kukkar and rat dance that he created for that event. We'll I'll just have to be really creative today. The only sucky thing is the shalwar Kameez. I'm laughing my arse off imagining KB in one already. Apart from that, Hashim just called me today and told me not to worry about GIKI and that he'll do my assignments for me(Boy!! For a big time procrastinator, I'm lucky to have good friends).

Oh and I met Raheel yesterday night, friendly chap, addicted to cricket. I guess i'll try to get to know him better in the upcoming days. The sucky thing is that I'll have to return to GIKI on wednesday not leaving me too much time.
P.S. I'll try to keep you people posted with the updates

Recent developments

Okay now I'm back in GIKI(A synonym for hell, also my university) and all the stuff you've missed and I didnt blog about:-
  1. How I reduced my CPU core temperature by 20 degrees C.
  2. My mom and sisters devious ploy which resulted in me getting a haircut (dont even ask)
  3. Eid, on which I visited my recently departed(My God Bless her) grandma's grave the first time.
Anyways now that I'm back I hope I'll be able to work on my FYP(it actually means Final Year Project :P). If not then I'll just watch a couple of TV series and kill the time.

Yesterday's Puppy Linux experiments didnt go as smoothly as I expected so I'll play around with the iso's a bit more before burning em. I handed over the responsibility of designing the super sonic double bionic multipurpose gizmo I've always dreamed of to a designerI recently met. Apart from that everything's going fine and I hope to get myself back in shape in a couple of weeks. All those iftaris at home made me gain a pound or two. When will the sports complex open :/

And oh where is Moody, I cant wait to get my hands on his throat. A lot has happend recently because of him, and one particular incident that happend day before yesterday is one of the funniest yet most humiliating things that happened to me in a long long time.

Oh and B^A has gone to Balakot to help the earthquake victims once again. He's setting up a school there. Too bad I couldnt go with him this time :( . Got caught up in wedding preparations for my sister.

Anyways all of you guys have fun and take care, stay tuned

Eid without a hard drive resident OS :(

Just a couple of hours ago I was a happy person until I had to mess around again with my linux installation. I tried to write a script that could clear logs, temporary files and other stuff that was make my life easier (not such a hard thing to do) but as a result and carelessness I ended up deleting my Linux Files. Thank God I had verbose mode on in the script otherwise I might have ended up erasing my precious data as well. I only lost my conf files. Anyways I think I'll go to sleep for now and get XP set up in the morning. Its about time I shifted to SP2.

Plus stupid Ubuntu isnt letting me cp files from my NTFS C:/Documents and Settings to my FAT32 D: Something with incompatible file names I assume, but still this is preposterous. Looks like I'll have to end up attaching the drive at my bro's PC and worry about linux later.

Take care Ya'll and until next time stay tuned and EID MUBARAK!!!!!!

Blog Feeds Ahoy!!

Another productive yet useless way how to spend my Time. After Hatim showed me Akregator, it looked so cool that I had to get it for myself!!!!!!! Mine all mine!!!!. So I got the program and stared adding feeds for everyone elses blog and it works wonders. A day in the life of an I-T during holiday season

Today (rather yesterday) was just another usual holiday season day for me. It starts off with me making a big mess. i.e. Playing around with my Hard Drive Partitions in Windows causing GRUB to give errors, Shifting the Hard Disk to my bro's PC, hypothesizing and Deleting Partitions in order to make stuff work, getting GRUB to work again somehow, going to hafeez center and getting Price quotes for Athlon 64 processors and Motherboards, a CD bag and Network wire extenders, coming back home and fixing the link between the floors, facing problems initially due to service tweaking and later on due to a wire being cross-over and also because of XP Firewall, and if you guys think this is not enough, configuring Windows ICS Connection with Linux (A really big Headache, but nonetheless like most other stuff simple at the end) followed by downloading update Patches for Suse10 which is still going on.

Perl vs Python : Some of the Geekiest and Weirdest stuff I came across :P

I was just going through the net trying to find out which scripting language would be a better option for me when I came across this. Thought you guys might want to read it.
P.S. For the dudes who dont like technobabble on my blog, email me or comment and I'll make a new one for this kind of stuff.

EXTERIOR: DAGOBAH -- DAY

With Yoda strapped to his back, Luke climbs up one of the
many thick vines that grow in the swamp until he reaches the
Dagobah statistics lab. Panting heavily, he continues his
exercises -- grepping, installing new packages, logging in as
root, and writing replacements for two-year-old shell scripts
in Python.

YODA: Code! Yes. A programmer's strength flows from code maintainability.
But beware of Perl. Terse syntax... more than one way to do it...
default variables. The dark side of code maintainability are they.
Easily they flow, quick to join you when code you write. If once
you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny,
consume you it will.

LUKE: Is Perl better than Python?

YODA: No... no... no. Quicker, easier, more seductive.

LUKE: But how will I know why Python is better than Perl?

YODA: You will know. When your code you try to read six months from
now.

Balakot

I'm getting prep'ed up with a lot of other gikians(those that didnt run home) to leave for Balakot shortly. The earthquake scene here in GIK was really irritating with 2 days of running in and out of the hostels a more detailed description can be found at Basims blog, but now we need to go to balakot for releif efforts. Check out this link [ORKUT LINK] for information how you too can help the victims at Balakot. Balakot is a severly hit area where no formal rescue operations have been started so far making it all the more essential for us to help. The nature of the work we plan to be doing is basically logistic support. Plus in GIKI 1 lac was collected and it is being dispersed in the form of food and medicine to the victims. So right now there is going to be a fund collection session after which we'll be leaving. I'll come back and post about the experience later.

Until then, peace out folks and pray for the victims.

Un Productive Fridays

Fridays have always really been a waste as far as my time is concerned, but this Friday I managed to get some work done. After missing my first 2 classes( all the classes today), I heard that my lab had been cancelled, so I wasted time till around 4 pm and then I decided to head off to the library with Hashim ( my new study partner. I just dumped sqeky cos he's too lazy). Over there although I was too drowsy to study anything myself, I managed to teach some GIKI school kid math and that wasnt such a waste when you come to think of it. I returned to my hostel at around 8:50 pm. Just in time for dinner. After that Faisal Kamran came to me with a concept on paper( an drawing actually for the logo of the GIKI Basketball Association ). Well we went to my room and converted it to graphic art and here's how it looked.

And after adding some extra stuff[the dunking guy] we get :-

My head is spinning.

We'll after the pool(from last blog), it was presentation time and the kids seemed to be enjoying it cos they were laughing. Maybe it was at me or maybe at my presentation, i'm not sure at the moment but the point is that at least the kids were happy. Near the end tiffy told me to go and speak on CS(unprepared) and I kinda got confused and started jogging around the class while explaining how they could analyze my jogging statistically to find out what I was upto. [:S] This part I think didnt really go well. THe lab started at 8:30 and went on till 10 followed by the netronix meeting followed by the dinner at the khokha followed by a game of DOTA(after getting back) and now I'm all exhausted. I need some shut eye.

Until next time take care.

Like a dolphin!!!

Well today has been the first time I went to the pool in a long long time. The day started with the usual eating breakfast sleeping in classes going to FYP advisors and in the end me and Hashim decided to visit the pool.

Upon entry into "The Pool", one must face the ice cold waters.(I wonder how the water is so cold in this heat). After that Hashim taught me how to swim the right way. My style of swimming used to be a mixture of breast stroke, doggie paddle and orthodox style.

Once we got the basics right, it was jumping into the water time, the water kept getting into my nose, it was downright annoying, until the diving part, I made Hashim literally dive 100 times before I gathered up the strength to dive myself and once I did it it wasnt really hard, but it hurt like hell. Amazingly the second time although my dive was perfect(according to Hashim) it hurt even more. Amazing haina!!!

Khair I hope to learn underwater swimming or something tomorrow. Right know I have to go to this ES event and give a presentation that I made(Tiffy shoul'nt have let me make a presentatition :D) I'll present it in front of the faculty and it is full of wacky stuff. Thank god it is ES and not my Faculty. :D If you want my presentation emailed to you then leave a comment. I'll try to get some web space to put stuff like this and later link it to my blog. Anyways wish me luck for my presentation. Until next time, stay tuned. Same I-T channel. Same I-T time.

P@SHA Job Fair 2005

Today I went and witnessed the P@SHA Job Fair 2005. For those who dont know, it was a job fair organized by Rozee.com. Surprisingly the head of the event was Abidoon Nadeem , a B-8 Gikian and co-Founder of netronix(GIKIANS Lead the way eh?!).

Yesterday I was up all night playing GTA San Andreas so I thought I wouldnt be able to make it today, but somehow I slept at 7:00 am and woke up at 9:00 am, and reached JIT for the registeration. Well the companies at the job fair were, techlogix, trg, netsol, intel, Mentor Graphics, abacus consulting and many others but the information they dispersed was well known esp to GIKIANS. The Mentor Graphics and Abacus dudes had stuff that was new to me and we chatted for quite some time. Mentor Graphics deals in RTOS'es, Drivers, Interfaces all the techno geek C stuff. Abacus'es PAPI( Personality and Preference Inventory) is availible on the cubiks web site and it is what employers use to determine the needs and stff of people who they hire for potential employers (e.g. how much power hungry a person is). So it is a middle layer company that has a part to play in the Recruitment Process.

  • The first workshop was at 10:30 but I missed that because I was 2 minutes late, but according to Rappie it sucked so I feel no remorse. After Rappie and I went out for Ice Cream and AFC( another SFC [FYI : SFC = "Sasta Fried Chicken"] ) for lunch and came back. It was then that Riz also joined us and we attended a couple of workshops. The time management one was a good introduction to the field.
  • The second one titled, "Bridging the GAP between the workplace and the institution" was all about IT [FYI : Information Technology not Iqbal Talaat] in Banking and though informative, it made me feel woozy because of lack of sleep.
  • The third one was about how to appear for an interview and it was stuff that you'd expect a 2nd grader to know, but some of the examples they gave were good about they experiences they had appearing for and taking interviews.
  • The last workshop was the funniest one and it was about how to recruit a person. Half of what the person was saying was Punjabi and he seemed to turn everything into a joke. He was a favourite for the Masses. He gave good examples and had good stuff to say about the qualities companies look in an employee. His Slides were also hilarious and I quote : "No Atitude + No Skills = Shit Man" [Sounds like a super hero]
After that we ate dinner from Tarka and went off to our homes.

Before I leave I would like to finish this post praising Abidoon, P@SHA and Rozee for taking the initiative for P@SHA Job Fair 2005. Although GIK has a good recruitment process and collaborations with companies, but for people who are not so fortunate this was a golden oppurtunity. Hope next years Job Fair will be grander than this one.

Some good books I came across

With the internship coming to an end you will find an increasing number of blogs about what people did during their internships for fun. Well among other things I read a couple of books. Dont get me wrong these books rock and werent just to kill off time.

There were three books of Paulo Coelho who I rather find fascinating as an author. His writing style is quite philosophical and it causes the reader to review his own life. So its a book that'll keep you thinking for hours and hours. Its a pity rather that people have no time for their own psychological development in todays busy world. My favourite book written by him was "Veronika decides to die", its about a young girl who decides to take her life because she thinks she has experienced everything life's had to offer. But her suicide attempt has failed and she is admitted in the asylum where she realizes that she has very little time to live. Paulo Coelho carefully analyses the world then from her perspective.
Another of his works was "The Alchemist", this is a classic title that even my grandfather had read quite a while ago, but which I enjoyed nevertheless. Its about a boy in persuit of his dream(something that no one gives a damn to anymore).
"By the river Piedra I sat down and wept" is a book about a young girl who writes about her lover. (Good book but the first two were better)

I am however looking forward to reading his new book, "The Zephyr". For those who didnt know Paulo Coelho is a Brizilian with most of his works translated from brizilian into other languages. He has won the Nobel Book Award for "The Alchemist". And I hope you enjoy reading his books as much as I did.

The other author is a far more recent Dan Brown. You will find reviews of his books extensively on amazon.com. He's an excellent author who disperses a lot of information about symbology, science and a whole lot of other stuff to his readers without making them actually aware. I love his writing style too and he is an excellent writer. From among his books I like "Deception Point", "Digital Fortress" and "Da Vinci Code". Ironically I lost "Angels and Demons" on Daewoo.

Other than that I read some Sydney Sheldon, and I guess that's all folks.

Coming in contact with my inner self

Back at Isloo and NCR there was no music, there were no PC games there was nothing. Whenever I tried to open any game related web site I used to get theese crappy messages.

NCR HAS BLOCKED ACCESS TO THIS NON-BUSINESS RELATED INTERNET SITE

NCR currently spends $25 million in data network-related expenses.  Since the initial deployment of the Internet Filtering Service in 1998, a significant decrease in the amount of non-business related network traffic has improved the efficiency and availability of NCR's global network for business use. These additional measures are expected to save an additional $500 thousand in network costs.

Well back then a friend of mine used to say :-

"May god have mercy on their souls! they just commited a sin of devoiding a gamer to come in contact with his innerself"  - Umair Azfar

Anyways now that that tyranny is over. I hope to reenter the world of gaming. Not just CS or warcraft3, but I have a lot of titles to do some serious catching up to do like San Andreas( heard that was good). I dont have enough time to end anything but I want to get a glimpse(5 hours game play) of millions of titles that my younger brother has kept hoarded up. Other titles to check out include battle for middle earth, HL2 ( I want to absorb more of it) and various others. ( I cant find the CD box right now)

Back To Lahore

Well I'm glad to be back in Lahore finally. Reached at 2:30 am during the night. Came here on a half full daewoo whose last 5 seats I had occupied for sleeping purposes. Anyhow I still havent compiled the list of Islamabad statistics that I was upto but you guys stay tuned.

The weird thing is that I still didnt get my evaluation. Zeeshu's going to get it for me. So anyways Now that I'm home I'm looking forward to continuing my social life. Another thing that came out of the unexpected. A dude at my office asked me where I was from and the first thing that came to his mind when I told him I was from GIK was Atif Anwar :P. Looks like Tiffy boy's turning into an ORKUT celebrity. Its devoted people like him that have managed to keep Pakistan on number 3 in ORKUT's usage stats after all. :P Okay dudes me is signing out Until next time I'm off to drink some tea

Covering the tracks

I've been at the paper shredder at my office since the last 5 minutes. I shredded all the stuff(around 20 A4's) that were in my drawer. They contained stuff like, diagrams, interface designs, algorithms, doodles, more doodles and a lot of other crap. It was fun running them all through the Paper Shredder together. Now I feel like shredding certificates the people have hanged around. I also want to shred Dietel & Dietel that is lying around and Beginnnig JSP 2.0 and the Office XP CD, and the tissues from the tissue paper box around me. Shredding is a great tension releiver. Maybe I should buy a shredder for my room in GIKI so that I can shred any quiz or mid that goes bad after gettting the result. Anyways you guys have fun I'm off to more shredding.

Toodles

Last day at the office

Today is my last day at NCR. I just finished the documentation of the HR Management System and now I have to get it burned on CD and thats about it. I've enjoyed my time at NCR. I'ts been my home away(NCR) from home(Isloo) away from home(GIKI) away from home(Lahore). The time was fun. But I regret one thing and that is why I didnt figure out how to use ORKUT earlier.

Right now I'm just meeting the guys, Altaf, Adeeb, Salman, etc (may God bless em all). You know Final goodbyes. I wish I had a camera or something. *Sob!!!* Right now Its raining outside real hard. Typical movie scene. But I want to leave and run around in the rain like a free man whose prison sentence has just expired. Prison might be a harsh word because this was one fine prison. I hope I'll be able to get some stuff done in Lahore that I was planning to. Chances are that I'll start sleeping like a lazy bum.

And before leaving I'd like show my Appreciation to each and every one of these people who took me out for lunch/dinner. It pays to do an internship in a city that is not your own. People are just so nice to you:-

  1. Uzair(Wattoos Friend) for taking me out to Italian Oven
  2. Rana Saqib for taking me out to KFC
  3. Usman Wahid for the delectable meal at Sufi Restauraunt
  4. Mian Omar(Raptor & Abdul's friend who I met for the first time in Pindi) for not letting me pay at KFC.
  5. The Bakery Dude who's name I've forgotten for free punch yesterday
  6. Roshi for free Chicken and Bahari Rolls in F10
  7. Zeeshu for Lunch at NCR Cafetaria.
  8. Babar Sattar for Lunch at NCR Cafetaria.
  9. Faiz Burney for Lunch at NCR Cafetaria.
  10. Fahd(Raja and Boxers friend who keeps coming to GIKI to visit) for Lunch at NCR Cafetaria.
  11. Talal Ubaid for his warm invitation to his home where I ate spaghetti after a long long time.
May GOD be happy with all of them. With this I finish this post and head off for lunch. My next post will contain Islamabad Statistics which I compiled and hope to get published soon.

Finally I got a JavaScript Clock Inserted into my blog. Quite cool actually. Now I can go to Peshawar Morr and enjoy a nice cool glass of lemon soda. Aaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!! And after that back to my room for sleep. zZzzz...

Internship Coming to an End!!!

Today is the second last day(or rather night) of my internship and it is coming to an end and I dont know what I am still doing at the office. maybe I dont want to let go of my IP Phone, maybe I am going to miss my laptop, maybe its the 100 K download speed but I guess this is time to say good bye.

Tomorrow I am getting my certificate and I'll be off for good. Well the whole experience was fun. I think I'll miss the samosa parties, the occasional extravagant meals(lamb roast, lasagne, etc). The people were nice. NCR has its share of smartasses, dumbasses, nice people and bad people, but I guess I'm going to miss Altaf and Helper the most. Salman or "Helper" as we like to call him is a considerate dude who'll come, spend time with you tell you stuff about your code and bug you till your head is about to explode but the magic is that in the end you feel like thanking him for it. He is a JSP dude who gave us a lot of tips and tricks.

Altaf on the other hand impressed me even before my internship. Rather he is the reason that I did my internship at NCR in the first Place. I really like the way he presented his company at GIKI last year ( during the b11 job tests). He let us sit for the test and later when I got selected, I couldnt say no. Even today he sat down with me and tried to help me find out a problem with performing operation on Access Dates, using the JDBC-ODBC driver bridge. In the end we both came to the conclusion that Access Sucks.

The City of Islamabad initially appeared to be a dissapointment after all I heard about the place but now I think I might miss it and also the whole internship experience. But then again this is a transitory period of my life. But who knows where I'll be doing a job next year. I have lots of obstacles right in front of me at the moment like :-

  1. Learning how to drive in 20 days
  2. Stydying for CCNA in 20 days
  3. Meeting everyone in the next 20 days
But the thing I want to do most of all is to get some shuteye. Preferably for the rest of my vacations. I also need music. MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!! Its been ages.

Well I guess Its getting late and it might be a good time to call it a day!!!. I would love to hear from all my readers so leave comments. I know you guys stop by really frequently. The counter shows it all. Which reminds me I need to add a clock to my blog. Okay ppl until next time. Take Care.

I'm leaving this conversation for you guys to read. Its a chat I had a couple of years back with a friend on Java and C++. This stuffs so funny that you'll laugh your brains out. I changed his nick in order to preserve his identity but you guys are welcome to try and guess :P

Copy the contents of the box below to a text file and save it as an html, open it with some webbrowser and then Have Fun!!!!!!!!

Computer Geek Test

If you're really bored like I am then head off to http://www.nerdtests.com/ft_cg.php
Below is my score. Lets see what you come up with. If you take the test then post your score in comments. I want to see what I rate among normal ppl.

My computer geek score is greater than 92% of all people in the world! How do you compare? Click here to find out!

weird blogs

Just a couple of minutes ago I came across a very unique set of blogs by trucktr543

The special thing about these blogs is that they are quite mysterious in the sense that their topics make sense and the content of the blogs are the topics padded with text that either makes no sense or is very hard to decipher.

e.g a blog titled hczvjrr and several others. If anyone finds out what the padding is and what it means, whether or not they are mapped onto the title text by some mathematical function or procedure as I strongly suspect ,or are they just nonsense do let me know. One advantage of these weird blogs is that they have given me one thing to really think about.
"Are ppl by default dumb or smart"
Anyways take care ppl and have fun. I'll try to see if I can figure out some relation in these blogs.

Goodbye to you!!!!

You have been with me through the good times and the bad times, but now its time to say farewell to you my friend. Drats!!! Another mobile gone. Its been 2 so far. First it was mobile number 1 (SAMSUNG RJ 445) Stolen in GIKI From my Very own room not too long ago.
Mobile #2 lost just recently while I was internshipping (thats what I like to Call it) in Isloo(Everything about that place is forsaken) a week ago. The reason I later got to know were well apart from being irresponible, there were other mysterious forces at work. The reason I lost mobile #2(NOKIA 3310) was because I went to get a haircut. I was not surprised. This is not the first time such a thing has happened. I ruined my 5th semester result just because I got a haircut before the result was out. There are of course many more incidents I can go on yappin about. But another time maybe in a blog titled, "The curse of the haircut" or something which you can expect to see in the near future but not too soon (It takes time to come up with stuff :: You were not supposed to listen to that). Anyways the point is that I got another mobile that has volunteered to be my companion.

Introducing Mobile number 3 : The Motorolla C115.
I hope this one stays longer. - Aameen

To my Readers

I'm was suffering from a severe case of bloggers block brought about by an onslaught of stupid teachers. The problem was really severe and now that I'm rid of them I hope I'll be blogging more offen (or as the britons call it "off ten").

Anyhew my semester finally got over on 14th of May and it was on that day when I left the examination hall that I heard birds chirp for the first time in four months. The grass was greener and the air was more blue. Even the van breaking down on the way to Lahore couldnt bring my spirits down. My spirits are especially high because I am probably not failing in any of my subjects this time and I've got an internship at NCR TERADATA (<--All caps and bold).

However it was after I returned to lahore when I heard the bad news. My Grandmother had just passed away and this had been a great setback for all of us. May God grant Paradise to her Dear Departed soul -- Aameen.

INNA LILLAHE WA INNA ILAIHE RAJEON
"Verily we are Allah's and verily untoHim shall we return. (Qur'an 2:156)"

I conclude todays blog with the following message. Take care of and cherish your loved ones otherwise you wont even know it and they'll be taken away from you. My Grandmother was a noble woman. One whom everyone loved and had respect for. She devoted most of her later years to praying for us and she acted like a prayer sheild which protected us from bad things. She was a devout servant of God. May God Grant her Paradise --- Ameen

Seismic Disturbance Triggered Sudden impending doom Hoax

It was 4:00 am and I was in one of my friends room when all of a sudden his IRC was being flooded with messages containing stuff like Earthquake about to hit GIKI and stuff. At first we thought it was a rumour but judging by the sheer amount of the IRC queries, this could not be a mere joke. It could however be a Hoax(Something that never came to our minds at that time). Moments later I called the GIKI telephone exchange and asked em what was going on and they told me to evacuate the hostel. So we ran around the hostel literally breaking everyones door down. After that we stood and waited in front of the hostel. Not to our surprise everyone from the other hostels were also standing outside thier rooms doing nothing for hours and hours. The mood of the people was more of a Come and get it over with. However luckily it didnt come and once again the day had been saved by nobody whoever he or she may be. We got to know about it being a hoax when ppl's parents started calling em and saying that PTV decleared it a hoax. GEO also made a transmission on their web site which we all listened to after all the wait.

Thank god nothing bad happened that day otherwise Pakistan would've been one giant pond thanks to Tarbela Dam .

Fate was never meant to be with me ....

5 am alone in my room and I have nothing better (in fact else) to do than enlightening(is endulling a word???) you ppl with just another episode of fate was never meant to be. So here goes.
Set amidst tall mountains, clear blue lakes and under the vibrant night sky was the GIKI campus. Inside the campus on the bed lay a young man sleeping. This couldnt be the man no it just couldnt ... so the focus was shifted to another room 6 rooms to the right and one floor above that particular room.

CRUD I forgot what I had to write about.

Happy 30'th Birthday PC

The Altair 8800 shown above was the worlds first IBM PC. It included Intel's 8080 processor, a memory for 65,000 words, 65,000 subroutine levels, and up to 181 available machine instructions.
The Altair 8800 shows little similarity with today's computers and came without monitor, keyboard or disc storage. Instead, switches and LEDs were used to develop simple programs. Even Bill Gates is reported to have used the device for his first applications. The Altair did not achieve a major breakthrough in terms of production units. The first computers to receive significant public exposure were the Apple II in 1978 and the IBM PC in 1981.
It was popularized in the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. The Altair 8800 was announced as the "world's first minicomputer kit" and could be ordered and built for $397. The assembled model was offered for $498.
The overall structure was housed in a box of dimensions 17x18x7 inches.

Blogging : A Revolution

Some Interesting Facts about blogging

  • According to ABC news Bloggers are the people of the year
  • Merriam Webster Dictionary calls blog the word of the year which it defines as:-

"a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections,
comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer,"
  • 27 percent of Internet users in the U.S. say they read blogs, representing a 58 percent jump in readership from the 17 percent reported in February 2004.
  • By the end of 2004, 32 million Americans were blog readers.
  • The number of people creating blogs also increased, but by a more modest number. More than one-in-ten Internet users, roughly 12 percent, say they have posted blogs or comments on other people's blogs.

Home at last (The after Shaadi Blog)

Everything was going on fine when out of nowhere there was a wedding. It was of my mothers cousins daughter or something. I dont know that side of the family really well but I didnt get real bored due to some strange reason. After all the classes I've slept through back in GIKI, sleeping through this one was piece of cake.(Did I mention that I can sleep with my eyes open).
The waiters were all dressed up real funny and looked like members of the mafia who were ready
to douse you with the soup they were carrying (Staying up late can make you imagine funny things.)

The good thing was that in the end the food was great or it seemed after the horrible mess food I'm accustomed to eating. In fact I eat so much that I dont think I'll be able to lie down until 3 am

Anyways the overall experience was good. Brings back old memories.
